The weight of a pixel

We talk about digital things as though they are weightless. But every pixel on your screen is the end of a chain — electricity, silicon, undersea cable, a data centre humming in a field somewhere cold. The lightness is an illusion. The infrastructure is heavier than anything we have ever built.

On fluid interfaces

The best interfaces feel like they are not there. You reach for something and it meets your hand. The worst interfaces remind you, constantly, that you are operating a machine. The difference is not complexity. It is whether the designer thought in terms of tasks or in terms of flow.

Measuring the invisible

Text on a screen looks simple. Letters in a row, words in a line. But underneath, the browser is solving a constraint problem — balancing font metrics, Unicode segmentation rules, and the geometry of the container. Most of the time you never notice. That is the point. This is exactly what Pretext is built to explore.
